October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Our neighbors, friends, family, and community members that are impacted by sexual assault and domestic violence need our help and support. In Howard County, the place many of them turn to is HopeWorks. HopeWorks is a non-profit agency providing vital services to women, men, and children impacted by sexual assault, and domestic violence. At HopeWorks our mission is to provide support and advocacy for people in Howard County affected by sexual and intimate partner violence and engage the community in creating the change required for prevention.
A little about HopeWorks:
HopeWorks has served the Howard County community for over 48 years. Last year almost 4,466 clients found the safety and support they needed to break free from violence. This was up from 2,780 the year before (a 61% increase). The need is growing but the federal, state and county funding has not kept up with the need.
By joining together as a community, we can ensure that HopeWorks can continue to provide crisis intervention and long-term wellness programs for survivors, community outreach, and prevention education.
Your donation goes directly to support the following services:
· Sexual and Intimate Partner Violence 24-Hour Hotline
· Emergency shelter and longer-term transitional housing
· Crisis and on-going counseling to adults and children
· Hospital accompaniment and advocacy services
· Legal representation enabling clients to obtain Civil Orders of Protection
· Awareness, prevention, and wellness programs addressing the root causes of violence
Every donation has a big impact and helps us achieve our mission:
· $25 staffs our 24-Hour Crisis Hotline for one hour.
· $50 reaches a child in need through our prevention education programs.
· $150 covers one in-person hospital advocate response.
· $500 supports a week-long stay in our Safe House emergency shelter
We have dedicated staff, volunteers, and board members to serve our neighbors in need. As President of the Board of Directors, and a long time board member I am asking for your help so we can continue to provide the services that we have provided for the past 48 years. No donation is too small to make a difference. Every dollar counts in the new era of budget cuts and financial worry. Any amount you can give helps HopeWorks continue to provide life-changing services to people seeking safety, and prevention programs that benefit our whole community. The Purple Challenge raises flexible funding that HopeWorks can use where it is needed most. When we raise unrestricted dollars, we are not just funding a program, we are helping HopeWorks remain ready to respond whenever a survivor reaches out for help.
Please join me during the month of October in supporting our virtual fundraiser, The Purple Challenge.
